Freedom of Expression

Freedom of Expression

The Issue

Freedom of expression is very important in a learning environment for students. The students of LISD are requesting a more relaxed dress code, allowing them to express their individuality in the ways that they please. Some of the changes all students would enjoy:
1. Unnatural hair colors (ex. purple, blue, orange, red, green)
2. Reasonable (ex. under 3) amount of facial piercings (ex. eyebrow piercings, nose studs/rings, lip studs/rings)
3. Stretched ears

As young adults we have grown up in the LISD community, where parents and guardians tell us to be ourselves. How are we able to do this if our desires are against dress code? When students are allowed to express themselves they learn to be happy with whom they are as a valuable member of modern society. The mission stated at www.lisd.net/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=118450&type=d&pREC_ID=231211 says "Students, staff and community design and implement a learning organization that provides engaging, innovative experiences every day." Students being comfortable with themselves is incredibly important to a more engaged learning experience. These are simple changes that do not affect anybody but students who wear these articles of clothing or accessories. These ways of expression have been around and are accepted in different parts of the world for a very long time (ex. stretched ears in Buddhist and African societies, nose piercings in Hindu culture, and hair dying as far back as Roman society!) If you would, please consider this change of rules to the dress code in LISD.
