Don't be a heel!

Link to the 2016 LISD’s Lewisville High School graduation information which has a section on dress code/attire for graduating seniors. I am hoping this is outdated and no longer the case.

Excerpt from the above link…

“Females: Dress/Skirt/Nice pants, Modest attire; no jeans. Please wear heels you can be comfortable in while walking up and down stairs!”

In the spirit of March being Women’s history month, and the recent celebration of International Women’s day it is perhaps time to rethink what I hope is no longer an official stance of LISD’s graduation attire and the expectation that girls wear heels. Why are we still punishing our daughters to weather discomfort for the sake of fashion. In 2017 surely girls can wear flats or whatever types of shoes that boys wear and enjoy what is clearly one of the biggest days of their academic lives without enduring blisters, calluses and pain.

Why does this make sense and why are we as educators sending the wrong message to our girls. Again are our daughters’ primary function to look pretty and adorn the stage or to walk confidently like their male peers in shoes which they do not need instruction or caution on how to walk up and down stairs with.

Please provide our GIRLS with the same concern for their feet that you do for our boys – liberation and equality come in all shapes and any Girl who wants to enjoy her graduation dressed smartly and sanely should do so unapologetically!
