The residents of Gillan Court 267 Baring Road Se12 0da were told back in 2018 that Riverside Housing, their landlord, were looking into building 9 new homes to the rear of the property to create more affordable homes. We were shown some fancy diagrams and made a lot of false promises. We were told before the building commenced on the new homes that our flats, which are in great disrepair, many of us have damp, cold, mice, old shabby kitchens etc, would be renovated first. We were also told we could still have access to onsite parking whilst construction went ahead. 2022 arrives, having not heard anything from them inn regards to the building, we get a letter telling us we had a week to remove our cars from the car park as they were planning to start construction on the new homes. We were told we could attend a zoom call but were not allowed to speak but could type in the chat box. The residents refused and demanded a face to face meeting as this was not what we were originally told would happen and it is not what has been submitted to Lewisham planning and been signed off either. We attended a meeting on the 7th February 2022, on arrival I handed the resident engagement officer Joanne Downs several documents including a petition from residents to object to the build, a list of residents questions, as some could not attend due to ill health, a list of demands we as residents want to be met before any building starts and copies of the original planning documents retrieved from Lewisham Planning application. These were all disregarded and they proceeded to show us a slideshow of what they are hoping to build. They are refusing to pay the insurance premiums that will rise if the residents have to park on the street for over a year as we will not be on a car park, they refused to lower our rent and service charges due to the loss of facilities and they informed us that the construction storage will be 2 metres from the ground floor flats windows all around the building with hoarding boards. This will cut out any natural light to those flats, the residents will not be able to open windows to access fresh , clean air, the children will have no outdoor space for over a year and some of the properties have 4 children plus adults overcrowded in 2 bed flats. The loss of outdoor space will have an immense and detrimental impact on the mental and physical wellbeing of these children and adults. The proposal of parking permits for neighbouring streets for the residents will cause insurance premiums to rise at no compensation from Riverside, will put single mothers and their kids at risk as there is no guarantee we will get a space even 2 streets away from our home and stop us being able to do large food shops as we cannot physically carry bags for the long distances. We have reached out to local councillors and MPs but we need the local communities support too. This will affect many in the Grove Park area as the already congested roads will be even more so if we all have to start parking on them as well as the loss of yet more green spaces for our children and the environment. Please sign and share this petition and help us stop these money grabbing people from succeeding in their next scheme!
