Richard Parry started this petition to Lewisham Council

Lewisham Way Youth and Community Centre was continuously operated as an 'Afro Caribbean Youth and Community Centre' for 44 years from 1972 until 2016. Find out more

The Community Centre is described on Lewisham Council’s website as, "a multi-purpose building that offers educational and enrichment activities for children, young people and adults from within the wider community". Multiple programmes running from the space included:

•Community Choir
•Music Production
•Black Women’s Group
•Women’s mentoring
•Mentoring Group
•Young Father’s Group
•Stop n Soup
•Numeracy and Literacy
•Heritage Classes
•Family Support
•Black Father’s Support Group
•GEMS Group
•Mentoring
•Discovering Science

In 2018, the community hall at 138 Lewisham Way disappered. And the current leaseholders are seeking retrospective planning permission to continue operating their private business from the premises. This is expressly against the building's permitted use, and the leasehold terms.

The purpose of this petition is to:

  • Keep 138 Lewisham Way a community centre.  Not offices for a media company.
  • Enforce local planning laws equally and without prejudice. Lewisham Way community centre would still exist had leasehold terms been maintained.
  • Stop the disenfranchisement of Black communities and the erasure of community space.
