From the Central Preston Trackside Group

The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) has a plan in place —

To accommodate more ‘open space’ within the station precinct on the market side, they want to move the existing carpark adjacent to the station to the northern side of Murray Road (under the new bridge), and increase the current Clinch Ave carpark (currently privately run with 25 spaces) size to accommodate more cars in the immediate future (to 50 spaces).

And long term, an additional larger ‘future carpark’ is proposed to be placed on the western side of the tracks, north of the electricity substation, creating even more traffic on Clinch Avenue via the single-entry driveway on that street.

CPTG’s Concerns

  • Placement of the carpark will result in the need for park-and-ride commuters to cross back over Murray Road in order to gain access to the station — via a newly installed signalised crossing at the very location where the level crossing will have been removed from.
  • Resulting additional vehicular traffic snarls — with two pedestrian crossings and the Murray/Spring/St Georges traffic light array within close proximity of each other.
Worsened traffic flow/interaction at the already problematic Clinch Ave/Murray Road intersection.
  • There are also concerns that no study or assessment has been carried out to evaluate potential negative impacts of increased and congested vehicular traffic on the zone.

CPTG’s Objective(s)

To use the open space resulting from bridge construction for:

  • Multiuse community engagement — ie, have LXRP/Council leave the existing carpark where it is (the south side of Murray Road/eastern side of the station).
  • Safe east-west access from the Murray Road/Clinch Avenue corner to the existing Murray Road pedestrian crossing — currently an issue that already needs solving.
