To the People of Germany,
On March 17, 2017, your esteemed Chancellor, Angela Merkel, visited the White House and met with President Donald Trump. Please allow us to apologize for the extremely rude and petulant behavior of the person whom we, the electorate, shockingly allowed into the Office of the Presidency of the United States.
Despite being a full seventy years old, Donald Trump’s behavior was immature, and fell far short of the level of respect requisite to host a world leader such as Chancellor Merkel. He has shown himself to be a person of bankrupt moral character, bereft of dignity and integrity, and incapable of the decorum required of his current office. His sulking, lack of preparation, continued lies, and his unfortunate treatment of Kristina Dunz leave us feeling ashamed and embarrassed. We are deeply sorry.
Please remember that Donald Trump was elected to the Office of the Presidency despite his opponent, Hillary Rodham Clinton, winning almost three million more votes. The majority of those who voted in the 2016 Presidential Election voted for a candidate who would be able to look Chancellor Merkel in the eyes, and to communicate with the appropriate level of experience, intellect, and competence Chancellor Merkel has surely come to expect. Unfortunately, Donald Trump did not, and likely cannot, rise to that challenge.
Please accept the sincerest apologies on behalf of the United States from the signatories of this letter.
