We, the MSW students of Western Michigan University and our loved ones, are requesting our College of Health and Human Services School of Social Work graduation to be held in person, to be attended by students only. Although the School of Social Work has attempted to create a celebration for students with an in-person photo opportunity, that event is scheduled during classes when students cannot be properly celebrated the way they deserve to be.

Students at the University attend sold-out hockey games in an arena that sits over 3,000 people. And it was just announced that the University is offering an in-person university commencement option at Miller Auditorium on April 30th.  This makes it clear that the University can hold an in-person ceremony and still be Covid compliant. We the students are willing to wear masks, social distance, and not have family in attendance in order to limit the number of people in one place. We request the students be allowed to have a physical stage walk and hooding ceremony while our loved ones watch virtually.

Additionally, Covid data tracking on Western’s campus, as sent through an e-mail from the President, has shown there is only a 1.2% positivity rate as of February 11th, 2022, and “65.2% of students, faculty, and staff have all completed vaccinations.” But according to the WMU Covid dashboard, that percentage is up to 72.8% fully vaccinated.

We hope by recognizing this data and the behaviors of Western Michigan University will have you consider changing our School of Social Work graduation from virtual to in-person. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Respectfully,

The MSW students of WMU and our loved ones.
