The University of Amsterdam has decided to cancel all exchanges in the 1st semester of the academic year 2021-2022 due to COVID-19. Many of us students are extremely saddened by this decision. We strongly believe the University should reconsider this decision, considering the fact that for many locations, the Covid situation will likely be much improved by September 2021 when looking at the progress that is being made in the vaccination programs in many countries. Furthermore, many other Dutch Universities have decided to let their exchange programs continue by looking at creative solutions, which UvA has failed to do. The Hogeschool van Amsterdam for example will let its students sign a waiver where they agree to terms such as that the student is aware that he is traveling at his own risk.

Not only has UvA canceled all exchanges, but they have also taken away our placement at host universities. This means that students who have been selected for an exchange program (Erasmus or Global Exchange) and offered a placement by UvA for exchange in the 1st semester of the academic year 2021-2022 can no longer keep this placement for exchange in the 1st semester of the academic year 2022-2023. Thus we have to go through the complete application process all over again and will not be guaranteed a placement. Many of us worked very hard for this placement and were very set on going on exchange. This decision is unfair, especially considering that students who were supposed to go on exchange in the academic year of 2020-2021 did get to keep their placement for the academic year 2021-2022. We believe that, if UvA is really set on canceling all exchanges, it should at least be up to the students to decide whether they want to keep their placement and opt to extend their regular study program with an extra semester by going on exchange during the 1st semester of the academic year 2022-2023.
