Why this petition matters

Started by Graham Tillotson

The current battle for leadership of the Conservative Party has once again exposed a serious flaw in our Constitution.

In the case of the Tories, despite several well-reported television debates between the rivals, only 160,00 or so party members, the majority of whom are elderly, can vote.

Each of the main political parties has their own idiosyncratic systems for appointing their leaders who, if the party is successful, becomes our Prime Minister.  And yet, in all cases, once again only a very small proportion of the entire electorate can vote.

To get their party re-elected at the next election appears to be more important to Prime Ministers than what is best for the country.

The purpose of this petition is to establish the extent to which other members of the voting public would prefer a change to our Constitution which would allow the people to elect their Prime Minister, not a small number of party faithful.
