Let students and teachers in NYC get an enriching ELA education
As of the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, 8th graders all around the city of New York have been reading the book “Summer Of The Mariposas” by Guadalupe Garcia McCall. Suddenly, the Department of Education calls for them to stop and drop the book, halfway through. They are taking “too long” to read a book that is meant to be analyzed. They wish for the students to read a ~300 page book by June. They will not allow the teachers to teach their own lessons.
This is outrageous. If it’s taken them 7 months to get through halfway one book, then how do you expect them to finish an even larger book in less than half of the time they took to read half of another book? They expect then to do the same repeated lessons and questions, over and over. 12 times. Please do not allow the Department of Education to take away our student’s education. To strip the teachers of any variety in their lessons. We are actively fighting this change. If this does not work, they’ll be overworked by the city which is supposed to support them. Even the teachers do not want to read this book. No one wants to do the same thing over and over again. Please help support our future generation’s education!
