Colin Alexander started this petition to David Lametti (Canada's attorney general) and

This Petition calls for a combined federal and province-backed inquiry to make lawyers and judges accountable to independent oversight, and to deliver recommendations for foundational reform of process and administartion.

Accountability is a buzzword of our time—except for lawyers and judges. But things can change. Making it happen requires concerted pressure on politicians at all levels. Only they have the power to impose the collective will of citizens against collective resistance in the justice system.

As everyone knows, justice is not accessible, affordable or accountable. The system is hopelessly inefficient and too often outright dishonest. Judicial councils, law societies and the ADR Institute, and sometimes even judges, circle wagons around rogue colleagues---as happens in any other self-serving trade union.

Addressing the challenge of accountability, Justice Michael Tulloch said in his report on policing in Ontario said: “There is almost universal agreement that the current system for adjudicating disciplinary matters is broken and does not have the confidence of either the public or the police. … A fair and effective public complaints adjudication system demands greater independence and impartiality.” It’s obvious that what he said also applies to the justice system—its own untrustworthy court of last resort!

This Petition calls for an inquiry delivering recommendations for:

* Credible oversight of lawyers, judges and arbitrators.

*  Bringing all aspects of the justice system into the modern world.

Reasons for signing

If you’ve had trouble with the legal industry, sign now. If not, sign anyway because you or someone close to you may land in the glue-pot. If you’re a lawyer, sign now if you want to get the respect your profession doesn’t deserve now. The term honest lawyer should not be a contradiction in terms.

Make sure you also pass this on to people on your own mailing list!
