Paulius Zaviša started this petition to European Commission

Purpose of this petition is to prevent cruelty to animals in food industry.

This is not an attempt to turn everyone into vegetarianism.

The conditions in which animals are kept in food industry are so terrible that we choose not to talk about it. It is not just uncomfortable. It is unacceptable.

We don’t want to be part of this brutality. But yet we are. Cruelty has no moral right to exist. But yet it exists.

Let’s look at the situation. Those who produce food from animals usually sell the most of it in supermarkets. Supermarket usually stands for the best price. Food producers are lowering the price as much as they can. They try to make production process cheaper by downgrading quality of life for animals. This goes down to brutality. Brutal regime is always cheaper than decency.

Supermarkets has a perfect excuse to justify these atrocities. They say:

"The customer is the king, he decides which products to buy"

This allows them to stand back and wash their hands clean. They are forwarding the guilt on a consumer. He pays for it, thus he supports it.

But consumer is not aware of his participation in something horrible.

There is no talk about brutality near the shelves. He or she sees nicely designed packages, with the very same animals dancing, smiling and showing thumbs up. The whole system cynically works in favour of cruelty. That is a problem.

But how is it possible to say that animal abuse is our choice, when all the information about this brutality is simply hidden from us?

It would only be fair to mark those products where animal cruelty was not avoided in production with a special information sticker; similar to the ones we are used to see on tobacco products.

If the producer tries to save by feeding animals low quality foods, keeps the animals in the unsuitable conditions and does nothing in order to ease the pain at the time of slaughter, then buyers should be informed. If we are kings who decide everything, then let us know the circumstances so that we can decide objectively.

This petition calls for a full review of the animal food industry. We want the keeping conditions, feeding and slaughtering of animals, to be in line with the criteria of decency.

But most importantly we call for the labelling the products where animal cruelty was not avoided in production with a special sticker. So the consumer will be able to choose his or her food wisely.

Your vote will be sent to those who are in charge of making the regulations in food industry.
