Recently, the NY Education Department released that they want every school with a Native American mascot to change the name,mascot and logo as they say it's offensive. While I understand how it can be seen as offensive, it's also kind of ridiculous. I’m sure many schools are upset about this. We are the Owego Indians and we always have been since the school was made and I’m sure it’s the same case for others. There's never been a problem with a Native American mascot on any school before but now suddenly there is. It's completely absurd to get schools to change their mascot. Not to mention, Owego was founded by Natives so it just makes sense to have it as Indians. I honestly couldn't even see us as anyone else..could you? This is not just Owego this is every school with a Indian mascot. I don't know about other schools, but owego is serious about being the Indians! We have our logo everywhere! It's so inconvenient to just take all that down just because a few people were upset about a logo. Not to mention the fact that we have a song sung before every football game about how a Indian painted his face red and blue and founded our school! The decision to change everything will also be tough on every schools budget. A lot of money will go into the expenses of replacing everything like football/baseball stadiums, signs, etc. This petition is to represent every school affected. Please join me in the fight to keeping ours, and every other schools logos by posting this petition on everything you can, share with family and friends, let’s try to get this petition noticed!
