I have children in the Board. I know that what works for one child would not work for the other. Why mess with something that is working and providing the best options for children.

I'm signing because children in Quebec who attend the Western-Quebec School Board should be provided with more than one choice of junior and senior high school. Children have different needs based on a variety of traits such as different personalities, learning needs, and family values. Children whose families live in rural areas should not have to attend an urban school if there exists another option. They may benefit greatly from attending a smaller rural school which would be in line with their chosen family values and lifestyle (such as farming, country-living, and rural values). At the same time, kids who live in rural areas should not be prevented from attending a larger school in Gatineau that could nurture their particular talents and budding interests in new fields including having a selection enriched French programs, sport-étude or art-étude programs, and a greater selection of competitive sport teams and extra course options in the higher grades such as chemistry and physics labs, extra art, journalism, and more that a larger school with more space can provide.
There is already a paucity of English schooling options in the Outaouais region compared to the number of French high schools options available in the same region. We already do not have as many unique programming options to chose from as the French-language schools have such as different sport-étude, art-étude, dance-étude programs and International Baccalaureate programs which are not even available to English students.
Please consider how much richer and well-adapted the next generation of adults will be when their learning environments have been tailored for them in their most formative years to nurture their interests, their values, their learning requirements, and provide the appropriate surroundings to support their particular characters. Many pre-teen kids who are timid or struggle in big environments chose the smaller school of St-Mike’s in those first years because it meets their needs at a time when the larger junior high school in Hull would be a frightening, unpleasant and daunting experience that could crush their enthusiasm for learning or for trying new things. Other children might be ready and have trained to join a highly competitive sports team or sports program offered by the larger high school environment. Limiting these options for kids during a key developmental stage of their lives based on a reason as parochial as a limiting geographical line that is merely in the interest of budget cuts or simplifying busing routes and busing times is simply not acceptable when considering the impact on each individual child affected.
There are two very good schools in this region that are each very unique and each offer an exceptional environment that together currently do a very good job of meeting the diverse needs of the children in this Outaouais region. Why curtail this richness of choice and supportive environment at a time when the value and importance of these formative years is even better understood than ever before?
Please consider carefully the detrimental impact of this budget decision on the children who will lead our next generation. Please make the decision to create busing zones that will continue to offer the two options for secondary schooling which respects the rights of children to pursue their own strengths and talents.

I know people that would be affected by the switch and who need busing to get to and from school

I understand that funding transportation over such a large area is a cost the school board wants to optimize, but it looks like parents feel strongly about continuing to have a choice re high schools. Hoping for a collaborative and positive outcome.

High school is a very important time in a child's life. Boundaries will cause harm to their education.
