My family obtained refugee status for the Yougoslav war in the 1990s. To have the opportunity to grow up in a safe country, to have the opportunity to go to school and university and study what I want has been the greatest blessing of my life.
This petition seeks to keep Naim Cekaj in Canada. Naim is a hard-working immigrant who runs his own business but has been declined a refugee status.
Naim had to leave Albania because he is involved in a blood feud. After Naim's cousin killed a man, the blood feud threatened Naim's life and forced him into hiding. The Kanun of Lek Dukagjini is an ancient code that is still practiced in Albania, which states blood demands blood from a male member of the killer's kin, not necessarily the killer themselves. Naim left Albania in order to protect himself because he was receiving threats and was a prisoner in his own house.
Naim has been living in Canada for six years away from his wife and his two young daughters. Naim cannot bring his family over until he has obtained a status in Canada. He has been served deportation and all his appeals have been denied.
This petition aims to keep Naim safe in Canada and bring his family over by appealing to the Minister of Immigration.
