Julien & Sophie Debord have been running Cafe Tennyson & Bistro in Napier for three years. As well as contributing to the local economy by creating jobs and paying taxes, they contribute to the vibrancy of the CBD and have developed Cafe Tennyson into one of the leading cafes in Napier.

(More on their story can be read on this Stuff article.)

When they came to New Zealand from France, their visa was granted on the basis of meeting certain business targets, targets that were set before Covid.

No hospitality venue in the country has thrived in the last few years and many have not been able to survive.

Julien, Sophie and their team have battled through the hardest time for hospitality for many years and the fact that their business continues, when many have not been so fortunate, is testimony to their determination, hard work and commitment.

We are asking the Immigration Minister, Kris Faafoi, to use any tools at his disposal to allow for the Debord family's visa to be extended, and to update the criteria for the granting of the Entrepreneur Resident Visa to take into account the unprecendented difficulties of operating a business under Covid conditions.

Julien & Sophie are kind, friendly and hard-working people and we only ask that they are given a fair go.

Despite what their visas might say, they are great New Zealanders, and we want them to stay.
