Rebekah Salisbury started this petition to Sadiq Khan (Mayor of London) and

As Birmingham is the second biggest city, the transport system is below par compared to London which is the biggest city in England.

The system in London allows users to hop-on and off any bus company within an hour for £1.50, and a maximum cap of £4.50 which includes buses and trams, which does not apply to zone restrictions.

Sadiq Khan, London Mayor, has stated on his website;

  1. 'Making Commuting More Affordable' - 'The cost of living in London is simply too high. Along with housing, transport is one of the biggest costs Londoners face. That's why, together, we're delivering on our promise to make public transport in London more affordable after years of fare rises under the previous Mayor. We’ve frozen TfL fares for four years in a row, introduced the unlimited Hopper bus fare and got the Night Tube up and running.'
  2. 'Cleaning Up London's Toxic Air' - 'Toxic air pollution causes thousands of premature deaths every year – as well as stunting the growth of children’s lungs and increasing the risk of asthma, cancer, strokes and dementia. It's also about social justice - air pollution has the biggest impact on the poorest Londoners who have the fewest cars. That's why, together, we're delivering the boldest action of any city in the world to tackle air pollution. I’ve also declared a climate emergency – promising a Green New Deal for London, with an ambitious aim for London to be carbon neutral by 2030.'

Since this is applicable in London, why is it not in place in Birmingham and the West Midlands?

Prices are very expensive in the West Midlands, £4.60 is an all day ticket, only applicable for the National Express West Midlands buses. These are non-transferable to other bus companies.

There is an offer at the moment on the National Express West Midlands website, stating 'Travelling between Selly Oak, Westside and the city centre? If you're enrolled at or employed by a university, or work for the NHS, you can hop on for just £1!' which is in place for a single journey, and JUST for a select few.

Since everybody is trying to be more Green and environmentally friendly regarding climate change with the world around us, Birmingham and the West Midlands NEED a change and to implement the changes in place as it is in London.

We need:

  1. All transport including buses and trams, to have a £1.50 hop-on and off for the hour of any travel company.
  2. A cap of £4.50 for a day of travel.
  3. Students/persons employed by a university/NHS workers should be entitled to discounted travel or a free transport pass.
  4. Make more buses green and electric/hybrid to help the environment regarding climate change.

Please help make these changes happen.

Thank you for your time; Rebekah.
