Florida hero student deserves a Medal of Heroism

When chaos descended on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School this past Wednesday, Peter Wang, a freshman, and member of the school's JROTC program leapt to action.

Rather than flee in fear for his own life, Peter took it upon himself to put the lives of his classmates above his own, and chose to stand firm, where he remained inside the school to hold the doors open so that others could safely escape.

Although he did not survive the day, his actions undoubtedly saved others, and his spirit, and his memory, should be celebrated by the organization he was proud to be a member of.

In the body of that boy lived the heart of a man. In the face of terror, he put self-preservation aside to ensure the safety of others. He was a warrior. He is a hero.

The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps can award the Medal of Heroism to a JROTC cadet who performs an act of heroism. An act so exceptional and outstanding that it clearly sets him apart from fellow students, or from other persons in similar circumstances. The performance must have involved the acceptance of danger and extraordinary responsibility, exemplifying praiseworthy fortitude and courage.

Requirements that I believe Peter Wang fulfills.

I invite others who feel the same way about his act of bravery to sign this petition, which will encourage the chain of command in the ROTC to begin the procedures where his heroism can be investigated, and a formal request presented for the posthumous awarding of the Medal of Heroism.
