On behalf of myself Leslie Anne Davey, my co-admin Donna Horsman and the BC-wide members of the Martin Mars-Protecting BC Facebook Community, we are asking the government of BC to:

1/ reinstate the 'Hawaii' Martin Mars Water Bomber as a critical inclusion and a necessary piece of equipment to fight the fires plaguing British Columbia this 2017 fire season and

2/ to contract both the Hawaii and Philippine Mars Water Bombers for 2018 and beyond

For over 53 years, the Martin Mars Water Bomber successfully fought fires on Vancouver Island and when called upon, the rest of British Columbia. Her talent is in Initial Attack - Get on the Fire as soon as possible and get it out! This was proven time and time again and over and over again. To deny the citizens of British Columbia all the tools in the toolbox available to fight fires, is negligence on the government's part.

The Hawaii Mars has been modernized internally and can drop ThermoGel that is proven to stop fires in their tracks (FPInnovations Mexico deployment 2011).  Both planes have proved themselves at sea level and at elevation, in ranch country and in coastal rain forests.

2017 is the worst fire season in recorded memory and still the Martin Mars sits at its base in Sproat Lake, Port Alberni, BC. The owner has stated the Hawaii Mars could be ready in a matter of days.

The BC NDP government needs to bring back the Mars!

Cost should not be a factor as hundreds of millions have been spent and hundreds of millions likely lost by the citizens of BC. We understand the Mars is high cost and we are willing to pay. We know what they are capable of . We believe the majority of British Columbians would support their expense if it means the Mars are used to their full potential to safeguard lives and property.

We are in a new age of fire fighting and fire behaviour and in many cases, containment does not work. The forest companies on Vancouver Island recognized that very thing 60 years ago to protect their forest assets. Today we are protecting communities.

The Martin Mars drops 4 acres of Water/ThermoGel on a fire, unlike any other aircraft in the world. No fire fighter has died whilst fighting fires under the Mars. It has worked alongside crews and other aircraft for decades. The Hawaii Mars is the only plane certified to drop on structures. The Martin Mars is 70 years old, yet has half the flying hours than other planes under a BC Wildfire contract. The Martin Mars underwent rigorous testing by NASA and is certified by Transport Canada annually.

The Martin Mars program was a victim of your predecessors who chose the pay to play analogy. Politics has no place in BC Firefighting, but under the BC Liberals, politics was the reason their contract ended. Don't let that reason hold in 2017. You, the BC NDP, have the power to transcend all political efforts within the bureaucracy of government, to change this for the remainder of the year of 2017 and ensure that the Martin Mars program will proceed with BOTH PLANES in 2018 and beyond!

Remember - INITIAL ATTACK - Get On The Fire As Soon As Possible & Get It Out!!!!
