Give us a better bus service in NW Waltham Forest!

The 158 cannot cope with the amount of people travelling from Higham Hill, Billet Road and Chingford Mount trying to catch it every day.

Buses often travel past packed at all hours of the day and night, but most noticeably in the rush hour. It is not uncommon to wait up to 20 minutes for a bus on this route, despite this being a key bus route joining residents in the North West of Waltham Forest to Blackhorse Road Tube (and beyond to the largest shopping centre in Europe).

This situation will only get worse as thousands of new residents move into new flats along the route in the coming months, many of whom will invariably want to get to work on the Victoria line.

For 3 weeks this summer (when the Victoria line was not working) the area had the 558 bus. Billed as a rail replacement, actually it took exactly the same route as the 158 from Chingford Mount, stopping at every stop all the way to Blackhorse Road Tube.

This massively alleviated the pain of the overcrowded 158 and over 7400 people were catching this bus every day, getting seats, and not waiting more than 5 minutes for a bus to get them to work or back home - a service that most other parts of the borough, and indeed the capital already enjoy.

TfL have said they will not consider bringing the 558, saying it's not needed now the Victoria Line is running.

TfL say that the 158 is a priority, but will not be able to change the service until at least summer 2016. There is currently no information about what changes to the service TfL will possibly be bringing in next year.

We think TfL needs to:

  • Carry out a full analysis of what this area needs in terms of bus provision - both now and for future growth, as hundreds of more residents move into this route.
  • Work with the council (specifically local councillors) in understanding the issues and problems people face with the lack of public transport in this part of the borough and what solutions there might be.
  • Ask resident's opinions and get feedback about what the best options are, e.g. More 158 buses? Buses running to time? More buses terminating at Leyton Station rather than Stratford? Changing the W15 bus route so half of them go past Blackhorse Road Tube Station? etc.
  • Improve current services making sure that the are keeping to timetables to alleviate some of the pressure points, particularly at peak times of the day.

The residents of the north west of the borough deserve a better bus service than the one they are getting!
