Amend zoning to allow recreational marijuana facilities within the City of Leominster, MA

This petition is to amend the Leominster zoning ordinances by adding Article XVIIII entitled “Recreational marijuana facilities” to allow and regulate recreational marijuana facilities within the city.
Last November, the majority of voters in Leominster and in Massachusetts voted to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. Regardless of whether or not you agree with that decision, I hope all of you will agree that our leaders should and must respect the will of the voters and the integrity of our referendum process, which gives "we the people" a direct say in our public policy. To that end, I will be submitting a petition to the Leominster City Council to begin the process of implementing the directive of the voters by amending the city's zoning laws to allow and regulate the sale of recreational marijuana within the city. The city council going on record to amend the zoning laws is the first step in this process. Once approved by the council, the work can begin with the planning board and city solicitor to draft the zoning amendment. That way, once the state finalizes its regulatory process, the city will have already built the framework with our zoning laws and will be in a position to quickly and efficiently incorporate the state regulations into the final zoning law and move forward with fulfilling the will of the people.
Timing is critical. This is an election year, and we voters have a right to know which councilors respect our decisions, and which ones would rather pursue their own agenda rather than represent our will. Please join me in this important first step.
