Violence against women is an emergency: we want action now from our Dublin West Ministers

The Issue

Street harassment, abuse, domestic violence, femicide — Not one more!
Dublin 15/7 Action Against Gender Violence says All violence against women has to stop. We need emergency action from our three Dublin West ministers — Leo Varadkar, Jack Chambers, Roderic O’Gorman.

The brutal killing of Ashling Murphy brought tens of thousands onto the streets in grief and anger. Ashling’s murder was not isolated  — gender-based violence is an epidemic and it rose during the pandemic.

Women and gender non-conforming people shouldn’t live in fear and have to plan our movements to avoid attack or harassment. And the reality is much violence  takes place within relationships where coercive control, physical and psychological abuse has ended in the death of women — including women in our community. How can we be safe in a society where male violence is widespread, tolerated and excused?

DEMAND EMERGENCY ACTION NOW
The Dublin 15 & 7 Action Against Gender Violence group is made up of local people who have been campaigning on this issue since 2019. The incredible solidarity we saw following the killing of Ashling should become a movement now to force real change.

In D15/7, we have three ministers at the Cabinet table. We call on them to immediately provide the following — these are basic and the least that should be delivered — International Women’s Day on March 8th is a good deadline:
1. Funds to expand Blanchardstown refuge - which turns away 500 women a year - with more spaces and outreach workers; and we need rape crisis services in D15/7.
2. Education now to challenge the culture of misogyny, male violence and transphobia — no more delays by either government or religious patrons.
3. End victim blaming and rape myths in the courts; support survivors.
4. Make our local area and parks safer after dark with proper lighting — light up Hartstown Park.
