We, the undersigned, are directly opposed to the unlawful removal of indemnity cover from independent midwife Philomena Canning by the HSE. It is evident that this action was taken without the appropriate investigation or due process. We are deeply concerned that her current clients-some 25 pregnant women-have been left without a midwife, without consultation or prior warning. The HSE’s action is not in keeping with public safety and we hold the HSE directly responsible for any adverse outcomes to mothers or babies as a result of this action. The action is tantamount to an abuse of women and a disregard for their choices, an action which we deem wholly unacceptable.
No findings have been made against this midwife. No client has complained. Ms. Canning is a midwife of 31 years standing with a 100% safety record. In the context of a country where women and babies have recently died in HSE-run hospitals without a single loss of professional indemnity.
We support Philomena Canning’s clients in their demands to have her indemnity restored. We demand intervention by the Minister for Health Leo Varadkar to ensure that each of Ms. Canning’s 25 affected clients are immediately provided with a primary care home birth midwife. The HSE said they had a midwife on call in the court hearing. We demand that this midwife now be (provided) made available on Monday 6th October to the six women expecting to give birth in October; on Tuesday 7th October to the four women due in Novemeber; and by friday 10th October to the remaining women expecting to give birth by June 2015. We demand that-in the absence of any findings against Ms. Canning’s practice-her indemnity is restored without further delay. The women of Ireland demand our rights to choice, to autonomy and to freedom from medical tyranny.
