Chris Higgins started this petition to Leo Varadkar and

Many of our over 70 population are fit and able, and indeed have endured many world crises in their lives, and so are very aware of the current issues at stake and have been a lot more vigilant than other sectors of our society since this COVID-19 outbreak began. Those who can, need to be able to get outdoors not only for their physical health but also their mental health. 24 hour lockdown for some of these fit and able people is creating massive panic and anxiety.

Sign this petition to help ensure cocooning does not decrease the mental health, fitness and physical immunity of immunocompromised and elderly population.

Petition the Government to dedicate 1 hour during the day to make public spaces available only to our elderly population, carers & those with underlying health issues who are being told/need to cocoon. We acknowledge that the underlying drive for cocooning is to ensure the wellbeing of those whose health is more at risk, but this 'protection'  could result in impaired immunity, reduced physical fitness and mobility, and also mental health issues. There are 24 hours in a day - surely 1 hour could be dedicated as an outdoor space for those 'designated' vulnerable. EG between 10.45-11.45am - before lunch when those out working will not be on the streets, and others can be asked to stay at home during this hour.

With spring and summer coming, April marks the beginning of when the sunshine can now provide us with Vitamin D - an essential vitamin that improves our immunity and helps build bones, etc.

The elderly and immunocompromised in our families are already isolated enough without denying them further.

Caveat - freedom to go outside would apply to people who are symptom-free, have not recently travelled internationally, and have not been in contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and are practicing physical/social distancing.   We also acknowledge that we are not experts in human health and that the scientific and medical community have still not identified the definitive cause of Covid-19.
