Why this petition matters

I am writing this letter on the behalf of the student body at Columbia Secondary School. I understand as the weather is getting warmer the dean’s office is choosing to greatly enforce the uniform policy, after choosing a policy of extreme leniency in the months of September through April. Granting students extreme punishments is the not answer to fixing the dress code in CSS, or increasing any kind of CSS pride. Instead, it causes disdain towards the school and leaves students with bad memories when they leave our institution. In addition, the way these punishments are distributed is simply unjust, because of the way certain students are being targeted by the school administration. As a student myself I have felt targeted by recent actions of the administration regarding uniforms. An example would be on April 14th of 2022 the day before students started spring break, I was targeted for my jeans, which contained no holes and had patches with distresses over them. While I was pulled outside of class and taken to the Dean’s office, we saw 3 students pass by completely out of uniform yet they were not pulled out of class being asked to change. It was three females one in biker, one in leggings, and one in ripped jeans with large holes in multiple spots. While I was eventually let go and released to go back into class this happened after making the argument that I shouldn’t have been dress coded in the first place and by the time I was let go I missed half of physics. It also seems that certain circumstances are not taken into account. While numerous members of the administration have made the argument that if we can afford Jordan’s, Cellphones, and name brand clothing we should have no issue coming into school in full Uniform but it should be taken into account that many students do not provide themselves with these items nor uniform, and we should not be punished for certain actions outside of our control. In addition, saying these comments to students while not being aware of their at-home situations is inconsiderate and does not contribute to a learning environment where students can feel comfortable and safe. While I have addressed issues I have found with this year’s Uniform Policy I have also found a solution,  I would like to give the suggestion that for the rest of the 2021-2022 school year students be granted the same uniform privileges as granted to them earlier in the year. Students should be able to wear plain/VERY small logo sweaters, sweatshirts, and hoodies, all with no hood in black, grey, navy blue, and Columbia blue. For bottoms, students should be able to wear plain/VERY small logo sweatpants and well as jeans with no holes, although no students should be punished for wearing jeans with slight distresses. I am not suggesting that this policy be implemented permanently at CSS but for the time being. Next year when we come back for the 2022-2023 school year I understand we should be expected to be in full uniform and abiding by the dress code with less leniency. But after the year we have had between adjusting from a pandemic, dealing with a strict bathroom policy, and overall trying to catch up from the learning loss we have had the last thing students should be stressing about is if they are the color of the correct jeans.
