Lehman FNP nurses nurses started this petition to Cuny Chancellor Felix V. Matos Rodriguez and

On November 20, 2020, CUNY-Lehman College lost its appeal to maintain its CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) accreditation for its MS (Master of Science) in Family Nurse Practitioner program. This decision bars the registered nurse graduate students currently enrolled in this program from sitting for their AANP or ANCC board certification. The issue was made public in the Fall semester of 2020, while the FINAL accreditation hearing was taking place. Over 200 registered nurses, including myself, learned that the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) withdrew accreditation from the Lehman College, City University of New York, Family Nurse Practitioner program. These 200 nurses will never have the opportunity to become board certified if this decision stands. Without the CCNE certification these nurses will not be able to practice as certified Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP).

Who are the registered nurse graduate students that this affects? We are the frontline registered nurses being praised this year for our demanding work against the COVID-19 pandemic, working tirelessly in New York City Hospitals. We are also mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, daughters, and sons who have sacrificed precious time in our families lives to complete this degree, while many of us continue to work full time as registered nurses. Furthermore, we are residents of New York, mostly residing in the five boroughs. The majority of us currently serve low-income populations as registered nurses and are committed to continue their careers providing care to the underserved at the advanced practice level. Obstructing this opportunity is not only an injustice to the FNP students, but the communities they care for, who already receive disproportionately inferior care, while concomitantly suffering from greater health disparity. In the year of the nurse this is an injustice. We risked our lives working tirelessly during the coronavirus pandemic. Today, we urge you to support us and request that CCNE grant Lehman College a good cause extension and allow the nurses currently enrolled in the FNP program the opportunity to graduate with CCNE accreditation and become board certified.
Lehman College exists to provide affordable higher education for inner city students. We demand to have all earned credits transferred to an accredited program or complete our education at Lehman with the right to take the AANP or ANCC certification.

Sincerely,

The Graduate Nursing Students of Lehman College FNP Program
