Earlier this summer, many Lehigh University sophomores, juniors and seniors registered for on-campus housing. Dependent upon your lottery number, you were able to sign up for a quad, triple, double or single room with a SINGLE room being guaranteed by housing services. Lehigh University Housing Services has since removed on-campus room and housing assignments as of August 4, 2020 for ALL STUDENTS. Housing Services has since required that if a student would be on campus for Fall 2020, they must QUICKLY send a request to Housing Services to take classes on campus. Of course, this email was sent August 3rd with the deadline for the request being on August 5th. A two day grace period means that a student may not be able to receive appropriate documentation from a professional that outlines why they may need certain housing accommodations. A Lehigh upperclassmen student was informed that if you are approved to go back on campus in the fall and do not apply for housing accommodations through the Disability Support Office YOU WILL BE PLACED WITH RANDOM ROOMMATE ASSIGNMENTS. This is UNACCEPTABLE. On July 31, 2020 Lehigh released an email stating that roommate requests were terminated and everyone would receive a single. This makes sense given the nature of the COVID-19 Pandemic and the spikes in cases and deaths across the country. But to be placed with a random roommate after all the precautionary steps Lehigh has taken to ensure our safety on campus is counterintuitive. The very least that the school can do is provide students with the option to select their roommates and where they will be housed. This will also allow students to PLAN ACCORDINGLY given the limited transportation options that will be on campus.
