Waterway debris is, essentially, any trash or litter that ends up in an aquatic environment. It originates from a wide variety of locations and often travels great distances before ending up in the ocean. It's a big piece of the global pollution problem and impacts human health, endangers wildlife, and can cost local economies millions in wasted resources and lost revenues.

Unfortunately, the Lehigh River, which divides the Lehigh Valley and the city of Bethlehem, has not been immune to this problem. Trash that finds its way into nearby creeks flows into the river and disrupts the natural environment. As students of the institution, we were disheartened not to see any mention of waterway debris or cleaning up the river in the Lehigh University's most recent update to its strategic plan for sustainability.

The Seabin V5 trash skimmer acts as a floating garbage bin that pumps surface water through the unit. It intercepts floating debris, macro- and micro-plastics, and is equipped with absorbent pads to collect petroleum-based surface oils and detergents. Funding, installing, and maintaining a Seabin V5 trash skimmer on the Lehigh River would be a major step in the fight against pollution associated with waterway debris around Lehigh's campus, the city of Bethlehem, and the Lehigh Valley.

Please sign this petition to raise awareness of the waterway debris problem and encourage Lehigh University to do something about it!
