The Voters Have Spoken!

On November 6, 2018, an election was held in Charleston County. Michael Miller, a sitting member of the Consolidated School Board was elected as Register of Deeds. This will create a vacancy on the School Board.

The law states that a Legislative Delegation will appoint Mr. Miller's replacement on the School Board. Although Mr. Miller's seat on the nine-member Charleston County Constituent School Board was not voted on during this election, another seat in his district (West Ashley) was.

Although the Legislative Delegation has broad authority to select Mr. Miller's replacement, we the undersigned propose that the Legislative Delegation should give first consideration to the candidates who ran for that seat in the Nov 6, 2018 election. These individuals demonstrated a commitment to serving the residents of Charleston County on the School Board, participated in public forums, and received a combined 60,000 votes in the election.

In the spirit of America's tradition of democracy, it is sensible and appropriate that one of these individuals should be appointed to fill the empty seat, rather than any person who was not immediately engaged in the Consolidated School Board electoral process.

Charleston County deserves to have a Consolidated School Board on which every member was a candidate who stepped forward to run for the position, not a political appointee who did not.

Therefore, we call upon the Charleston Legislative Delegation to appoint one of the West Ashley candidates for Consolidated School Board to the seat vacated by Mr. Miller.
