To the Honourable the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, in Legislature Assembled:

The petition of the undersigned residents of the Province of British Columbia, states that:

Whereas there are no provisions in BC Labour Standards Act to make paid sick leave mandatory; and

Whereas millennials are facing less security of employment and are increasingly relying on part time or temporary contract work; and

Whereas the Province of BC has made mental health a priority by creating a Mental Health Ministry which should focus on ensuring that mental illness is treated fairly in accordance with other illnesses, and,

Whereas other jurisdictions in North America and around the world already provide their citizens with paid sick leave,

Your petitioners respectfully request that the Honourable House amend the BC Labour Standards Act to make paid sick leave mandatory for all part time, full time, temporary and contract work undertaken in the Province of BC, and undertake a review of other jurisdictions to set a reasonable minimum standard if allowable sick days in a calendar year.

This petition will be delivered to:
  • Harry Bains, Minister of Labour
  • Government of BC
