Why this petition matters

Started by Paul Doherty

The Government of Alberta is currently seeking salary reductions for Alberta public sector workers seeking to align with the national average.  In the words of Alberta Finance Minister Travis Toews  "It is simply reflective of our fiscal reality, and one that many sectors in the province have experienced."

Currently the base compensation of  an Alberta MLA is $120,000.  The average base compensation for the other provincial representatives in Canada is $96,000 - a difference of $24,000.  Maintaining this $24,000 differential neither reflects Alberta's current fiscal reality nor shows a sense of leadership and shared burden.

Therefore, in order to truly reflect Alberta's current fiscal reality and prior to entering any further negotiations, we call upon the Legislative Assembly of Alberta to immediately reduce the annual compensation for Alberta MLA's from $120,000 to $96,000 and that the Legislative Assembly further consider making this reduction retroactive to April 2019.
