Why this petition matters

Based on experts, abortion is one of the safest medical procedure. With the professional medical practitioners and right equipment used, safe abortion will be done. There’s a method that world health organization recommends, either it’s pills or simple outpatient procedure. By legalizing abortion, these procedure will be done safely with the help of medical professionals. Unsafe abortion will be prevented by the legalization of abortion here in the Philippines.

Even if abortion is illegal here in the Philippines, there are still women who are doing and will be doing this procedure. Abortion that is done unsafely that results to endangering the lives of those women. They would still look for ways to abort even if it is illegal. By doing this unsafe abortion, high chances of long-term and life-threatening diseases can occur in a woman’s body. They cannot seek help to medical professionals about what to do to have a safe abortion due to the reason that it is illegal. Illegality of abortion makes the rate of woman’s life in danger higher.

A woman choosing to abort is her right to control her own body and what happens to it and abortion is an exercise of that right.

Women who decide to abort has their own reasons. It is just not because they don’t want a child but also because they are not prepared in having and supporting a child. It can be because that they are not mentally or physically prepared to have a family of their own. Mentally not prepared because maybe the child that will be formed in their wombs is a child that was a result of sexual assault and of course, they can’t bear to have a child with their abuser. The child that will be born will just remind the mother how traumatic her experience was. They are not physically prepared because not all women that are able to get pregnant will be able to handle the difficulty and pain of childbirth. Given that they maybe a teenager since teenage pregnancy is prone here in the Philippines but also maybe because their body may not be built for it. Their body may not survive childbirth because of some illness they are experiencing that disables them to have a high chance of surviving after or during childbirth. We all know that there are many women who dies in the process childbirth. Abortion does not just fall under the reason that a woman doesn’t want the baby but because her body disables her to keep the baby. There are some women with heart defects that can cause them to die during childbirth so their only option when they get pregnant will be abortion.

Women might have decided to abort because they are not financially prepared to have a child or to start a family. They are not yet ready to support the child financially which is a problem because not only the mother and father will suffer but also the child that was born. The child may not receive the needs that he or she should be given due to financial difficulties.

The child that will also be born might be an unwanted one. He or she was created as a result of a mistake, which might have resulted in the neglect of the child. This results to the child not having the rights he or she should be experiencing when born including support, love, and the feeling of being wanted. The child will always be blamed for all the problems their family will experience since they were born. This can lead to a child’s mental health problem and might grow up also blaming their selves for the suffering of their parents or mother.
