Why this petition matters

Started by Richard Barnes

The current energy crisis has made people cut back on their heating bills by turning down the temperature in the home. At the same time public places like restaurants, pubs, hotels... Also schools, clubs, shops..... All continue to crank up the temperature believing its what their customers expect. Setting a maximum allowed indoor temperature to say 19

degrees C would save the UK overall many megawatts and have positive environmental benefits. It would show the UK as a leader in its attitude to energy waste and climate control. Enforcing such a law would not be easy, but one can imagine a small and low cost temperature measurement device could be installed that sends messages via cellular networks. As a logical extension there could be legislation extended to private spaces such as homes, but that would doubtless evoke a counter lobby from those believing in their personal freedom to heat their house as they wish,  so logically public places are the place to start. (Temperature limits could be increased or simply not apply to places such as old-people's homes and hospitals etc)
