Legal Empowerment and Advocacy Hub started this petition to Florida Parole Board

Ms. Tavia has been incarcerated for the past 25 years for a crime she was not the actual perpetrator of (due to her sentence being set under accomplice liability). Ms. Tavia was represented in court by a counsel who was later deemed ineffective and missed several opportunities to reduce if not completely eliminate her sentence. Additionally, further evidence has been uncovered, and if it had been available at the time of her sentence likely would have resulted in Ms. Tavia's acquittal. Ms. Tavia suffers from Lupus and would like to be released so that it can be managed properly outside of prison.

In a couple weeks, Ms. Tavia will have a parole hearing to assess whether she will be released from prison after spending 25 years away from her children and grandchildren. Many friends have written in support of Ms. Tavia's release and she has made plans for employment and housing pending her release. Through the support of others, even strangers, who understand the unfairness of her situation, the parole board's decision could be swayed in her favor.

This petition was started by...

the Legal Empowerment and Advocacy Hub based in Gainesville, Florida. As a part of the larger Participatory Defense Network, our hub is concerned with providing information to families regarding how they can help loved ones who have recently been arrested or jailed. An additional part of our mission is to fight for those in prison who reach out to us in the hopes of obtaining justice. We believe that Ms. Tavia has more than made up for a crime she didn't even commit and has worked to improve herself in prison. As such, she deserves to go home to her family who has missed her all these years.
