Dear Friends,

The last few days has been a reminder of the stark violence of the 1983 riots and mobster mentality of a few that is threatening basic fundamental rights and privilege of a citizen of any sovereign nation.

We have written a Letter of Solidarity to the offices of the following individuals holding high-office in Governments of Singapore and Sri Lanka:

1. H.E. Lee Hsien Loong  - the Prime Minister of Singapore

2. H.E. Vivian Balakrishnan - the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Singapore

3. H.E. Nimal Weeraratne - the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Singapore

4. H.E. Ranil Wickremesinghe - the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka

We eagerly seek your support to stand in solidarity with the People of Sri Lanka in these trying times.

Please read the attached Letter of Solidarity and support us in this cause.

Thank you,

The Sri Lankan Community in Singapore

Your Excellency,

In Solidarity with the People of Sri Lanka

We, the citizens and residents of Singapore, are writing to commiserate with the people of Sri Lanka who are enduring a streak of racially motivated violence inflicted upon the Muslim minority communities in Sri Lanka over the last few days by extremists groups.

An assault of a man from Teldeniya, Kandy by four people that led to his death was used by radical hardliners to initiate a systematic and well-organised mob-led violence across various villages over the last four days, targeting Muslim properties and shops. The ineffectiveness of the civil defence forces and the government to act promptly, has resulted in an estimated decimation of more than 150 homes, shops and vehicles since Monday, 05-Mar, 2018.

These acts are against all fundamental rights as citizens of a sovereign country that is still reeling from three-decades of civil war and the failure to uphold law and order and abide by it.  This resulted in bolstering these radical group(s) that have continued to mount attacks despite the declaration of an indefinite curfew and a state-of-emergency; a first since the end of the civil war era.

We in Singapore value our multi-culturalism and truly appreciate our multi-faith society to maintain peace and harmony among each other, with mutual respect of our differences to maintain the freedoms we are privileged to have.

At such times of distress, it is essential we spread a message of solidarity, unity and unequivocal condemnation of the acts being perpetrated in Sri Lanka against the minority population.

Hence, we beseech Your Excellency to issue a Letter of Solidarity with the People of Sri Lanka on our behalf.

In this respect, we would like to present Your Excellency with this written petition by the below mentioned for your prompt consideration for action.

Yours Sincerely,

The Sri Lankan Community in Singapore
