Gateway East Trails, a 501c(3) non profit corporation, is dedicated to the development of bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure in and around Lebanon, IL. GET has been able to raise funds and has proposed a trail to be built on an existing right of way following a cartway/roadbed established in the mid-19th century that has been unused for decades. Currently there is no safe way for bicyclists and pedestrian to travel under their own power to the south, west or east out of Lebanon due to high speed state highways with very narrow or no shoulders. This first trail of two planned for the city will open a safe passage to the east and south. The project is almost fully funded through funds raised and donation of labor and some materials. Full funding will be available shortly after construction of the approximately 400 yard trail begins in the spring of 2018.

The Lebanon Township Trustees have given GET permission to move forward with the project. However, there are individuals in Lebanon who do not understand the project and what it will do for the citizens of Lebanon and others who come to the city for recreation. This small group of residents and non-residents are trying to derail the project through a petition they plan to present to the township trustees. Among their reasoning is their belief that cyclists are endangered by traffic on the low volume county roads at the east end of the trail. These roads are regularly used by cyclists now for their own recreation, and for organized rides that occur almost weekly during the late spring, summer and early fall. Another concern they raise is the fact that the trail may flood several times a year. The flooding is slow moving water that has not eroded the current route and will be mediated by keeping two culverts that have been ignored in the past cleared of trees, branches and other debris. The engineering firm hired by GET is comfortable with the location of the trail and GET has the approval of various agencies including IDNR to go ahead with the project.

The dedicated group known as GET has been working since 2010 to make this happen. We will gain nothing from the trail except the satisfaction that we have improved the livability of Lebanon and will  be making a significant economic impact to the community as the trails are developed. The bottom line is that we need your support now to demonstrate to the trustees and these other individuals that the trail should move forward.
