Ban yard waste burning in Lebanon

The burning of yard waste creates smoke that is a health hazard to many residents of the city that suffer from asthma, emphysema and other respiratory issues. Older adults can be affected simply because their lungs don't work as well in the past. The smell of burning yard waste is offensive to many more residents. The smoke from burning of yard waste cannot be controlled as to direction, so it forces others to change their activities and close windows to minimize, but not eliminate, smoke entering their residences. Often the pile of leaves only smolder and generate smoke without a hot fire that would reduce the particulates in the air. Depending on weather conditions, the smoke may stay in the air after the actual burning has completed.
Weekly yard waste collection service is available from the city's waste and recycle provider, currently Republic Services. The cost is approximately $5.00 per month for weekly curbside pickup of yard debris including: grass clippings, leaves, branches, and other landscape debris. This service is available from approximately April 1 though December 1 each year. Elimination of burning and use of the collection service will improve the air quality of our city and reduce the health related issues currently being experienced.
Request the city council prohibit all yard waste burning within the city limits of Lebanon at all times. The prohibition would apply to open burning of all landscape waste.
