Waltham Forest - Stop Harassing the Homeless!

Waltham Forest Council is harassing those who are homeless and forced to sleep rough on our streets. Mainly these are young men with limited access to emergency housing or the kind of services they need. The Council is now threatening to confiscate the few possessions they own, stripping them of the last vestiges of human dignity.

The Council has over 10,000 people on its waiting list and an untold number sleeping rough. Instead of using its resources to alleviate the local crisis in housing, it is proposing to build 'monster' tower blocks that would require a salary of over £90k in order to afford a mortgage. This is not an ordinary worker's wage.

In 2016 the Council exacerbated the housing crisis when it cut £1m from its housing support budget which previously helped local hostels providing exactly the kind of support rough sleepers need to change their lives for the better.

We say:

* End the harassment of rough sleepers;

* Build council housing that is affordable on an average working wage;

* Introduce rent controls that halt the rise in private rents across the borough; and

* Reinstate the funding for local homelessness support projects.
