Please let’s put the situation into context, we are faced with a massive valuation increase as seen in the media around the Johannesburg rates increases. It is key to note that in the Midvaal area have both a valuation increase but are also faced with the fact that we have lost the previous 75% rebate offered to Agricultural less the 16 Hectares. It was always understood that the rebate was due to the fact that we as agricultural do not receive all municipal services and are often subject to additional maintenance costs on our own personal items due to bad roads and infrastructure. This included damage due to potholes and electrical appliances, occasional flooding due to inadequate drainage in the area. We previously accepted this state. If we are going to be paying residential rates then we should be serviced residential and we can see many service delivery protests on the horizon.
I have on several occasions requested a meeting with the council to get this resolved and to date out of my many emails, I have really only received two responses and one of them was to explain to the mayor not to me.
As a layman, I invite anyone from the Democratic Alliance, please feel free at any time to correct the perceived/hypothetical calculations done by myself as many, many assumptions were made due to information lacking from the Midvaal Municipality. My own personal valuation has currently gone up 34%.
Using the current rand and cents amount (Using current ratio as we do not know the new rands to cents factor that is determined by the local municipality) factoring in the valuation increase, we show there is a perceived 323% increase in rates for my personal property from an amount of R1 067.51 to an amount of R4 519.03. I welcome a correction in the calculations.
In a recorded meeting the Head of Department Finance in Midvaal, Annette van Schalkwyk advised that the rates may increase between 5% and 100%. Please lets also confirm the 100% ceiling increase on rates. This should calm the situation down.
