Le Moyne College: Commit to 100% renewable energy by 2020!

Fossil fuel consumption is one of our planet's largest problems. Its effects on the air we breathe and the water we drink are increasingly obvious. Extreme weather events such as Hurricane Matthew, sea level rise, the death of large swaths of the Great Barrier Reef, and increased asthma rates in polluted areas are only a few of the warning signs that we are experiencing.
It is evident that figures in our new federal government are turning a blind eye to this issue, so we the people must be an impetus to change. Once we become a 100% sustainable energy college by 2020, other local institutions and people will follow suit.
We need an aggressive plan to make the switch to solar panels, wind, or geothermal energy. We can either install clean technology, or get our power from a renewable source not immediately on the property.
As one of the best colleges in the Central New York Area, I believe that we can pave the way for a renewable energy future. Since Donald Trump's election, and the nomination of ExxonMobil's Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State, we have had protests regarding an array of issues, one of which is the environment.
Le Moyne has acted on sexual assault prevention, equality for our LGBTQ peers, and most recently, standing with refugees and immigrants. Now, we must act on the environment, which sustains all of us.
