Save Merit Scholars started this petition to LBUSD Superintendent and

This petition has been started by Lakewood High School concerned students, parents, and alumni calling for transparency from LBUSD regarding any proposed changes to our Merit Scholars pathway and reforming the School of Choice application system that over the years has affected students and families throughout the district.

In a recent letter to parents at Poly High School following the proposed changes to the CIC magnet program, Superintendent Jill Baker repeated claims about lower enrollment and interest in “non-industry-focused pathways,” including Merit Scholars at our very own Lakewood High School.

But as we’ve learned from what has been happening at Poly, this is a result of the district's choice to implement a “first choice” method that limits students’ ability to apply to all the programs they are interested in.

If students do not get accepted into their First Choice, and their First Choice was NOT at their home school, they are placed into a pathway either in their home school or risk being placed in a random district pathway. This forces parents and students to be selective with their FIRST CHOICE in fear that spaces will fill up if they choose that option second.

STUDENTS AND PARENTS DESERVE TO HAVE A CHOICE IN THE PROGRAM THEY WISH TO ATTEND - THE DISTRICT SHOULD NOT BE MAKING THAT CHOICE FOR THEM.

Given the events taking place with the Poly CIC program and Superintendent Baker’s letter, we are concerned that similar changes are coming to Merit Scholars and other honors programs throughout the district as well. Why hasn’t the district been transparent with those programs? Why are parents, students, teachers, and community members being kept in the dark?

This petition calls for (1) the school board to end the School of Choice “first choice” method so that students have the chance to apply to and attend programs of their choice, and (2) to keep pathways like Merit Scholars as specialized college-prep pathways that have historically provided students with an enriching, diverse experience and preparation to succeed in college.
