Why this petition matters

Started by Aaron Sterwerf

Littering at the skatepark has been an ongoing problem for years.  Most of us who care about keeping the park open and clutter free would like to take things a step further and recycle some of the litter we pick up.  Some of us have reached out to the city only to be told this is a hassle, but with the right message and leading by example I believe we can begin a recycling program at the skatepark that will benefit out youth and the future of our planet.

In 2018, the City of Lawrenceburg made a motion attempting to close the Todd Creech Memorial skatepark due to excessive waste not being placed into the proper receptacles.  With the help of the community we were able to bring to the city's attention that it was not the local skateboarders who caused this mess. Most of us know the clutter comes from the non-skateboarding "spectator" crowd. We demonstrated our passion for our local park by taking the time to clean up all of the rubbish whether it was ours or not.

Over the past year I noticed while cleaning the park the majority of the items left behind were plastic bottles and other recyclables, so I and a few other people reached out to the Parks and Recreation team about possibly getting a recycling bin or two to alleviate more of this headache only to be told it was a hassle.

I want to show the city that not only do we care about our park and the use of it in the future but also recycling can be taught and utilized by the up and coming youth who use the park as well.
