Student at Texas Tech started this petition to Lawrence Shovanec and

Governor Greg Abbott ended the mask mandate for the State of Texas, but Texas Tech University has decided to continue it on campus. There are many students who oppose this course of action.

Students and faculty should have the personal freedom and right to choose to wear a mask or not. We have all been educated about the virus and have the information and tools to make a good decision for ourselves. Students and faculty will be able to continue wearing a mask if they want to, but no one should be forced to.

Masks also makes learning more difficult for some students. For students that are hearing impaired, professors wearing masks causes many problems. Facial expressions are a huge part of human communication and interaction, and masks make this impossible. They can also be uncomfortable when worn for long periods of time, which is a distraction from paying attention and learning in class.

Texas Tech should respect the personal freedom that we are granted in the United States and Texas, and should listen to what students want.
