Ryan Powell started this petition to Lawrence County Prosecutor Sam Arp and

We are  asking for the limited decriminalization of possesion of marijuana of one ounce or less.

Essentially we ask that through prosecutorial discretion and police arrest discretion, the people over the age of 21 not be arrested for simple possession of marijuana of one ounce or less.

This would help alleviate the costs of housing inmates in the jail.

Reduce the number of cases pending in the courts.

Allows the police departments and prosecutor's  office to allocate that time and funding to other priorities.

Still allows officers to use possession as probable cause to search for other substances

As a community these types of drug arrests negatively impact employment of individuals.

In the changing landscape of employers it also makes our area look less desirable in choosing to locate here for young couples and companies looking for new locations.

The act of decriminalization or depenalizing possession of marijuana  could have a significant positive impact on the area.

Please take this into serious consideration. The trend nationally is going towards legalization in some form, and we are simply asking for limited decriminalization. It is neither noble nor wise to hold out until we are the last of a dieing belief.
