We live in a time where incentives make people more motivated to act. You go to work, put in effort, and collect a check for your time and energy. You go to school, get good grades, maybe win awards or recognition, and earn a degree. Organ donation should be no different. Too many people are sitting on a list, waiting and praying for a living donor to come along and save them. My mother is one of them, sadly her children can’t donate a kidney because we have the same disease. We want the law to be changed so that family members can offer a gift or monetary donations to those that decide to give the gift of life through organ donation. Yes the insurance company covers the bills of the donor, but who covers the day to day living expenses while the donor may need to recover?!? Being selfless and giving a piece of yourself to save someone else shouldn’t go unrewarded. We deserve the right to offer a gift, an acknowledgment of their good deed. Insurance companies could save themselves money by giving $10,000 to every organ donor. The cost of keeping someone on dialysis and medication alone costs way more. Imagine how many people would possibly come forward to donate a kidney if they knew they would benefit from it as well. We are pushing for the laws to be changed, so that it’s not illegal to offer someone money or gifts in exchange for an organ donation. Let’s incentivize organ donation, let’s reduce the number of people sitting, waiting, and wishing for a living donor. Let’s save lives!
