Resign for promoting 9-11 trutherism
Why this petition matters

On April 16, 2018, Charlotte city councilwoman LaWana Mayfield shared an article on her Facebook page suggesting that the World Trade Center towers were destroyed by a "controlled demolition" on September 11, 2001. This is one of many long-since debunked conspiracy theories about the September 11 attacks.
According to a city spokesperson, Mayfield was merely "asking a question," and is not a truther. But that statement is belied by the first sentence of the article she shared.
"Ever since the moment that the towers fell, people have been saying that it was a controlled demolition. Now we might have academic evidence to prove the theory as fact!"
This theory was completely and thoroughly debunked in a 2017 study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. It conclusively proved what most of the nation saw that day--the towers collapsed due to the massive damage from the impact of two large jumbo jets.
By giving her imprimatur to this conspiracy theory, Mayfield has brought shame and disgrace upon herself, her district, her city, and her state. It is simply not acceptable for an elected official to use his or her platform to promote such claptrap.
Mayfield needs to spare herself, the people of Charlotte, and the people of North Carolina further embarrassment by resigning.
