The Law Society of Ireland has confirmed that exam results for the August 2020 sitting of the FE-1 examinations will not be released until 28th September 2020.

This means that if a candidate has failed an exam in the August 2020 sitting, they will have only 1 week or 2.5 weeks, respectively, to prepare for the October sitting of the Law of Torts, or the Law of the European Union examination.

This places a large number of candidates at a significant disadvantage and has the potential to seriously affect exam performance, if the proposed dates are not amended.

With the above in mind, this petition proposes a number of potential solutions;

1. The Law Society should release exam results from the August 2020 sitting no later than Friday, 11th September;

2. The proposed FE-1 exam timetable spanning 6th - 16th October should be revoked and a new timetable should be set for November 2020; or

3. Additional sittings should be made available in November 2020 for candidates who have failed an exam in the August 2020 sitting, if results are to be released on 28th September. This would be in addition to the October '20 sitting proceeding as scheduled.

Given that the Law Society has failed to acknowledge the existence of the petition thus far (which has caused additional stress to candidates), proposal no. 1 is no longer an option.

We ask that the LSI carefully consider the difficult circumstances that candidates have been placed in, particularly in the midst of the additional uncertainty and difficulty caused by COVID-19.

Regards,

FE-1 Candidates 2020
