I am a former LAUSD student and I along with many of my peers have seen the effects of the poverty draft going into play at our schools. As a community we want to stop LAUSD from letting military recruiters into our schools and contributing in the poverty draft.

These recruiters target schools in low income communities where the students also happen to be mostly POC. The students end up enlisting due to capitalist coercion. They tell these kids about all the benefits but none of what comes after. They use the kid’s vulnerability, backgrounds, and family stories to make them feel like they have the upper hand in this, they lead them to believe that they will take their families out of the generational poverty with the benefits they promise. They offer free housing, food, pension, and education. To a kid from a low income community this all sounds amazing, but they are never made fully aware of what they would be putting on the line.

According to the AFSC, the pentagon spends $2.5 billion annually on targeting high-achieving, low-income youth with commercials, video games, personal visits, and brochures. This petition is geared towards stopping military recruiters from coming into our schools and coercing students into enlisting.
