Jake Borto started this petition to Representative Lauren Underwood

For a country historically touted as a beacon of democracy, it is quite ironic that the method the US uses to elect individuals to the most powerful position in not just the country, but the world, is the exact opposite. The Electoral College, an institution seen as impeccable, effective at making the correct decisions, and a stronghold of representative democracy by the Framers of the Constitution, is actually elitist and undemocratic at its core. Time and time again, from the 1824 Election to the more recent 2000 and 2016 Elections, the Electoral College has been exposed of these exact flaws, in that the electoral vote chose a victor that differed from the candidate who won the popular vote. The interests of a few elite electors should not determine the future of the entire nation: that decision should rest firmly in the hands of the people

In addition, this institution is inherently undemocratic in the sense that it creates a deep divide in between 2 different types of states: battleground and bystander states, with the former receiving a distinct advantage. In our increasing partisan political landscape, accumulating as many votes as possible in elections has never been more important for candidates, with many focusing their efforts each election on a select few states that are not consistently "red" or "blue." These "battleground" states receive most of the attention during campaigning season; in 2016, for example, 12 states, including contested ones like Florida and Pennsylvania, accounted for 94% of all rallies held by Clinton and Trump. Thus, it is evident that battleground states receive far more attention, while the 38 others were left with virtually no attention. And with no attention in campaigns comes little attention in a president's term; battleground states receive the most funding for their programs, and receive the most attention in getting their policy issues implemented, while the matters of other states, and their citizens, are largely ignored. A system that gives precedent to a small minority over a majority does not seem to represent the interests of all, but rather a few, so in order to remedy these undemocratic issues, the Electoral College, an outdated institution, must be abolished and replaced with a direct popular vote.

To restore the power back to the people, contact your representative and get this crucial issue on their policy agenda.
