Due to the recent pandemic, all University of Exeter students were advised to go back to their homes for their own safety and University classes were held online from March. This has meant most of the students staying at Exeter One (Student accommodation) have left their rooms since March.

Since the UK was put into lockdown on 23 March and this approach was used internationally as well to limit the spread of the virus, it means that the international students who travelled back home would have to go back permanently. However, we were forced to pay for the entire contract at the beginning. Therefore, the only way is to request the refund, which can be up to 3,540 GBP (Apr to Aug 2020). Despite many private student accommodations releasing their residents from their tenancies, as we are no longer using any facilities or the rooms. However, Exeter One insist to remain to keep the contract and not even allow the tenants to rent out the room.

Exeter students' guild has released a letter advising student accommodations to release their tenants from their contracts as well as the University allowed students living in University-owned accommodation to terminate their contracts. Since Exeter One is sublet by the University, the students who booked via the University have got the full refund from April to August 2020. On the other hand, other students who booked via agencies or directly with the accommodation got no refund. Hence, we have been treated unfairly since Exeter One keeps on rejecting the request and shows no compassion.

Within the difficult circumstance amid the pandemic, it has no doubt that the financial situation of many students has been affected. Some students rely on an additional job to pay for their rent and others rely on their parents; it is a fact that many jobs have been terminated and businesses have been closed. Therefore, this has an adverse effect on the income of many households. In such a difficult time, the landlord of Exeter One should show compassion for their residents and act with fairness, especially since Exeter One was introduced to us by the University and also the University sublet the accommodation as well.
